El Salvador, and here

This is the family the shop is named after.

Photographs, ours, not stock. A wedding, a grill in El Salvador, grandparents who have been married longer than most of us have been alive. The collections upstairs are named after these people because the products came out of these afternoons. Some of our pictures have our children in them and those are not on the internet.

Bruno was hers before the marriage and he has never left El Salvador.

1 / 3Before the store

The family came first. The shop came a long time later.

These photographs were taken across years, in more than one country, on whatever phone was nearby. They are not a brand shoot and they are not in date order, because we do not have reliable dates for them and would rather say so than invent a caption.

Long dogs. Big love. Hecho en familia.

Before the store

The oldest pages in the album. Everything after this one is measured from here.

The day the two halves joinedEverything else on this page is either before this photograph or after it.
Florencia's grandparents at the wedding, her abuelo speaking into a microphone while her abuela listens beside him

Her abuelo, saying something at the wedding.

Two homes, two countries

Two lives running in parallel, in two countries, years before they joined.

Florencia already had Bruno, in El Salvador. Sean already had Bonnie, in California. Neither animal ever made the trip, and the two of them never met — that is not a sad detail, it is simply what two lives in two countries look like before they join.

In California

Sean on a grey sofa in a white t-shirt with Bonnie lying along his forearm, her paws up, both settled
Before any of the rest of itThis is the receipt for the order of things: Bonnie asleep on Sean's arm, in the apartment, years before there was a shop or a dachshund in it.

In El Salvador

Bruno lying on a warm stone terrace in a Salvadoran garden, a volcano and palms behind him, drawn in the SalchiLuna house style

The family grows

This is the loudest chapter in our house and the quietest one on this page, and the reason for that is at the bottom of it.

Florencia, Renata and Leah together in a hug with Luna, illustrated in the SalchiLuna house style
Drawn, not photographedEvery child's face on this site is an illustration. It is the only kind of picture of them that goes on the internet.Florencia, Renata and Leah — and the dog who decides where everyone sits.

Some of our photographs have our daughters in them. Those are not on the internet.

Half of us are still there.

El Salvador, at the table

Half of this family is there. The shop is bilingual because of these afternoons, not because of a market.

The family crowded into one photograph at dinner in El Salvador, grandparents at the back of the frame

A table with everybody at it

Somebody cooked for this many people and then somebody took a picture of it, which is most of what a family turns out to be.

Florencia and Sean holding each other in the evening in El Salvador, greenery behind them

This was in El Salvador.

The family gathered around a full grill in El Salvador, meat and green onions cooking, everyone turning to face the camera

Bruno lying on a wicker table on a Salvadoran porch, flowering plants and greenery around him
A drawing of Bruno on a porch in El Salvador — not a photograph of him. The one photograph of him the family has cleared is two frames up this page.

Bonnie

The calico who was here first, in California, and who has been running a hostile takeover of this store ever since.

Sean in a white vest holding Bonnie as a kitten against his chest, one hand cupped under her, both looking toward the camera
Before the crownShe is drawn wearing a crown on everything she has seized. This is the kitten it started with.
Bonnie, a calico cat with green eyes, standing on pale blue bedding with one white paw forward, looking straight at the camera
Bonnie tucked between a grey cushion and a pale curtain in the window light, eyes half closed
Bonnie asleep along the back of a dark sofa, her chin resting on a cream fringed throw

Bonnie had already decided the bed was hers.

  • Sean in a dark red shirt holding kitten Bonnie up toward the camera, her white paws stretched out
  • Bonnie lying on her back against someone's leg, front paws folded over her chest, one green eye half open
  • Bonnie stretched along the edge of a grey sofa with her paws hanging over it, looking down past the camera

Luna arrives

The dog this whole place is named after, from the grass in the first weeks to the middle of the bed.

Luna as a puppy lying on her back in cut grass, legs folded, photographed from above

The first weeks

Every drawing on everything we make starts from this animal. This is her before any of it existed.

Luna standing on a made bed in white floral bedding, head turned, looking up and slightly past the camera
Black and tan, eleven pounds, entirely in charge.
Luna resting her head on a pillow in cream bedding, eyes open, not moving
Luna curled on a red-and-white checked blanket with her chin resting on the fabric

She does not sleep at the foot of anything.

Luna sitting up at the balcony rail with her back to the camera and her tail along the floor

She picked the balcony and kept it.

  • Luna asleep on the same pink floral bed with one paw draped over her face
  • Luna lying on her back on a checked blanket with her front paws folded over her chest
  • Luna asleep half under a yellow blanket on a blue throw
  • Luna asleep on her side on a bed, legs stretched straight out behind her

  • Luna asleep in a round cream bed under a patterned fleece blanket, only her head showing

SalchiLuna today

The same two people, a great deal more family, and a small business that came out of the afternoons above.

Florencia and Sean close together for a selfie outdoors, he in a wide white hat
Still the two of themEverything here was made in this household, at this kitchen table, for people who live the way we do.

The people the collections are named for

Seven of the thirteen collections carry a family name. The other six belong to Luna, Bonnie, Bruno, Chanel, the whole house, and the dogs we still talk about.

  • Florencia, illustrated in the SalchiLuna house style, in a cream cable-knit sweater

    Florencia

    Florencia Casa

The creative voice of the shop, and the reason every piece has to feel like it belongs in a real home.

  • Leah, illustrated in the SalchiLuna house style, in a cream bucket hat holding Luna

    Leah

    Leah & Luna

Luna's person. If you have ever watched a kid and a dog decide they belong to each other, you already understand this collection.

  • Luna sitting up with a pink flower tucked into her collar

    Eugenia

    Eugenia Essentials

The one who notices what is actually missing on a walk, in the car, and by the front door.

Portrait on the way — Luna is standing in.

  • Renata, illustrated in the SalchiLuna house style, wearing a cream SalchiLuna crewneck

    Renata

    Renata's Rincón

Stickers, notebooks, small joyful things. Her corner of the shop is the one kids reach for first.

  • Luna standing in profile, her long low dachshund silhouette

    Sean

    Brown Dog Dad

Keeps the business honest — the costs, the promises, and the policies behind every order.

Portrait on the way — Luna is standing in.

A note about the pictures

We are a real family, and the children in it are children first. No photograph of them is published anywhere on this site and none ever will be — every face you see here is an illustration. The reference pictures they are drawn from stay private, and we never publish personal details about the kids.

An album is not a campaign. These are the pictures we would have kept anyway.
